15. AI in Revit (MCP)

With BIMit you talk to your AI and it uses BIMit for you: «turn the client's WBS table into a configuration and write it to the model», «export the revised sheets to PDF», «which project parameters are empty?». It works with any AI app that uses local MCP servers: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Antigravity, the ChatGPT desktop app (or Codex), GitHub Copilot in VS Code, Cursor, LM Studio or another one (Your AI). The AI sees the tools of the packages that are on and uses them on the open model, with your account for that app. It also works with several Revit sessions open at once. It is optional: if you do not turn it on, BIMit works as always.

The AI is not included in BIMit: you use your own AI app, with your own account, or a local model.

Turning it on and off#

On the BIMit tab, the AI panel has two buttons:

ButtonWhat it does
AI On / AI OffConnects the AI to this Revit or disconnects it. The symbol is green when on (AI On), red when off (AI Off). With every Revit off, the AI sees only the bimit_stato tool, which explains how to turn it on, and revit_istanze.
LevelWhat the AI may do in this Revit (below).

What used to be in the Config MCP window is now in Settings → Your AI.

The Level button#

The level says how far the AI may go in this Revit; the packages say which tools it sees; during the beta your account includes them all, except the developer previews (Access in the beta). The button's menu shows three levels: Read, Write and Team.

LevelWhat the AI may do
ReadReads the model, views and files; selects, asks you to click, opens a model detached. It changes nothing.
WriteAlso writes in the model (Revit transactions, undone with Ctrl+Z) and in this PC's files. This is the default.
TeamAlso the team actions: synchronize with central, relinquish elements and worksets, save as central. Each one asks your approval in a Revit dialog.
CodeDeveloper preview, coming soon: also C# and Python code inside Revit, DLLs, Revit's commands and buttons. Not in the menu in the public beta.

Only you choose it: no AI tool can raise it. Team (and Code) last the time you choose, then it goes back to the default; every Revit start begins at the default.

First time#

  1. Install your AI app on the computer and sign in with your account. You need the desktop app: the web version cannot see Revit.
  2. In Revit open a model, click Settings → Your AI and set up your app (Your AI).
  3. Restart the AI app: quit it completely (also from the taskbar, near the clock) and open it again.
  4. In Revit click AI Off so that it becomes AI On (green). Try asking the AI: «Which model is open in Revit?»

After that, just click AI On in Revit. If you turn on another Revit while the app is already open, the AI usually sees the new tools by itself after a few seconds; if it does not, start a new conversation or restart the app.

Your AI#

In Settings → Your AI you see the apps BIMit can set up, each with its status. BIMit adds only its own server (bimit) to the app's configuration file: the other servers you already have stay as they are.

Each app's status is Connected · 10:42 (it used BIMit in the last 24 hours), Configured, Not configured or Not installed. Set up adds BIMit to the app's file (the previous version stays next to it, .bimit.bak); Try opens the app with a test question already typed (it also copies it to the clipboard, in case the app does not fill it in); Remove takes out only BIMit.

The Ask the AI buttons (BIMit tab, all-tools window) do the same: they open the first app that already has BIMit (Claude Desktop, then Claude Code, then the others), so the answer comes from an AI that reaches Revit right away; if none has it, they set up the first installed app BIMit can set up. With Claude the request is already typed; with the other apps it is in the clipboard and you paste it with Ctrl+V.

AppWhat BIMit sets up
Claude DesktopThe Claude Desktop chat, as before (Add to Claude Desktop).
Claude CodeBIMit's plugin, with its commands (in the terminal or in Claude Desktop's Code tab), or the connection prompt. It is removed with Claude Code's own commands: Remove copies them to the clipboard.
ChatGPT desktop app (or Codex)The ~/.codex/config.toml file (%CODEX_HOME%\config.toml when that is set), section [mcp_servers.bimit]. ChatGPT on the web cannot see Revit.
GitHub Copilot in VS CodeThe %APPDATA%\Code\User\mcp.json file, servers entry.
CursorThe ~/.cursor/mcp.json file.
Gemini CLIThe ~/.gemini/settings.json file, mcpServers entry (your other settings stay as they are). Then open a new terminal, run gemini and type /mcp: bimit is in the list. Gemini asks permission before using a tool: you can allow it once or always.
AntigravityThe ~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json file, for the IDE and for the command line (agy). Quit and reopen Antigravity: bimit appears among the MCP servers (in the app, under Settings → Customizations).
LM StudioThe ~/.lmstudio/mcp.json file. With a local model the requests do not leave the PC.
Another appCopy configuration: the configuration to paste into any app that uses local MCP servers.

Every app sees the same tools, with the same permissions: a package turned off on the toolbar is off for every AI.

Skills. Besides the tools, BIMit gives your AI skills: folders of instructions that tell it how to work well with BIMit (modelling, checking BIM data, exporting sheets, writing safe code, keeping a project's continuity, building families from a datasheet…; the ones on code, CAD → BIM and families from a datasheet are for the developer preview). The AI loads them by itself when your request is about them. With Claude Code they come with the BIMit plugin; with Gemini CLI and Antigravity BIMit copies them into that app's skills folders when you press Configure, and updates them with BIMit. Remove takes away only the ones BIMit wrote: your own folders stay where they are.

AI activity#

In the BIMit pane, AI activity shows the AI's latest actions in this Revit. The full log also shows which app made each action.

There are also the packages of the Development area (C# code, Python, Revit API, Script, Revit commands), which the Code level needs, and the administrator's (Users), for that account only. The Coming soon packages (Uniclass, Create family) have no tools yet.

Developer preview. The Code level (with the Development area), CAD → BIM and PDF → family (famiglia_costruisci, famiglia_lavoro: the family built from a datasheet) are coming soon. In the public beta they do not appear on the tab, in the pane or in All tools, and the AI does not see them. With the developer's version, Paulo offers modelling and consulting.

Every tool also accepts the optional «documento» argument: the title, file name or full path of a document open in that Revit. This way the AI reads or edits an open model without you making it active; without it, it uses the active document.

Several Revit sessions at once#

You can turn on AI On in several Revit sessions open at once, even of different versions (for example 2024 and 2027, or two 2025): the AI sees them all.

  • Which ones — «which Revit sessions are open?»: the AI uses revit_istanze, which for each Revit gives the identifier (year and process number, for example 2025-18244), the Revit and BIMit versions and the open documents.
  • Which one to use — «use Revit 2024» or «work on the Hospital model»: the AI uses revit_usa with the identifier, the process number, the year (if there is only one Revit of that version) or the title of an open document. From then on the AI works on that Revit.
  • For a single request — with two or more Revit sessions every tool has the optional «revit» argument: the AI sends the request to a specific Revit without changing the chosen one.
  • All together — with «revit» set to «tutte» the tool runs on every Revit and the answer has a section for each: «in all open Revit sessions, how many doors are there?».
  • With only one Revit on, the AI uses that one. With several and no choice made, the AI gets the list and picks one, or asks you which to use.

Good to know#

  • The AI writes straight into the model, without asking for confirmation. Every operation is a Revit transaction: Ctrl+Z undoes it.
  • While a Revit or BIMit window that blocks Revit (a dialog) is open, the AI waits: close it and it carries on.
  • What you ask the AI and the model data it reads go through the provider of your AI app (for example Anthropic for Claude), under your account (see the privacy policy).
  • For the WBS the AI starts from the configuration linked to the model, the same as in the WBS window: what it saves you find there, and vice versa.
