Sleeves

MEP › Sleeves

Finds where pipes, ducts, conduits and cable trays cross walls, floors and structure, linked models included, and creates numbered sleeves in a single operation you can undo.

What it contains

The tools for sleeves and openings: the same functions as BIMit's "Sleeves and openings" window, plus a solid-to-solid clash check.

BIMit looks for where the MEP runs (pipes, flexible ones too; ducts, flexible ones too; conduits; cable trays) cross the chosen elements (walls, floors and slabs, structural columns, structural framing, structural foundations, roofs, ceilings). Runs and elements can be in the current model or in linked Revit models, rotated or moved links included. It follows the runs through couplings, unions, valves and straight tees: a pipe split inside a wall is one crossing.

For every crossing to cover it works out the opening (outside size of the run, plus insulation and clearance, rounded up to the standard sizes), merges nearby openings in the same element, and creates in the current model one Generic Model (DirectShape) per opening, with size, sequential code and elevation. The options stay saved for the next time, in any project.

When to use it

  • To place the sleeves of an MEP model that crosses a linked architectural or structural model, or the other way round.
  • To find out first how many sleeves are needed, in which categories and with which sizes, without touching the model.
  • After the MEP runs change: the BIMit sleeves already in the model are neither duplicated nor deleted, and BIMit points out those a run now comes out of.
  • To check whether a pipe or a group of elements you just created clashes with walls and structure.

The tools

  • Find clashes: which elements intersect the given elements, as pairs with their ids. Changes nothing.
  • Options: the saved sleeve options, the defaults, what each field means and the first new code.
  • Save options: saves the options for the window and the other tools, without placing sleeves.
  • Analyze: counts the crossings and the sleeves that would be created, with the list of planned openings. Changes nothing.
  • Create sleeves: places the numbered sleeves in a single operation, undone with a single Ctrl+Z.

Good to know

Every change to the model can be undone with Ctrl+Z in Revit; team actions ask for confirmation in Revit.

Where it is in Revit

BIMit tab › MEP panel › Sleeves. From the package, "Open window" opens BIMit's "Sleeves and openings" window: choose the MEP runs to pass through (with the minimum size per category and the models to take them from, or only the elements selected in the current model), the elements to cross and their models, the opening size (shape, clearance per side, projection per face, insulation, standard sizes), the checks (merging nearby openings, grazing runs, sleeves already there), the code prefix and the workset, then "Place the sleeves". The result shows the table per category; "Select the new sleeves" closes the window and selects them in Revit.
