Family parameters

Technical name: famiglie_parametri

Data › Families

Reads

Opens the chosen families in the background, without saving them, and lists the removable parameters with shared, instance or type, data type, formula and where they are used.

What it does

Reads the parameters of the loaded families, like the scan of the "Family parameters" window (Parametri famiglie). Families are given by name or id (the id of a type or of an element works too), or a scope is used: elements visible in the active view (default), elements selected in Revit, the whole project.

For each removable parameter (not Revit's built-in ones) it returns:

  • family, family id and category;
  • name, whether it is shared (with its GUID), whether it is instance or type, the data type;
  • the formula, if any;
  • where it is used: in other parameters' formulas, as a dimension label, in associations with parameters of the family's elements; the parameter counts as "used" only in these three cases. Reporting parameters are flagged too.

Filters narrow the list: parameter names, shared or family parameters, instance or type, used or not used, words to search for. With per_nome you get a summary by parameter name instead: how many families have it, in how many it is used, shared, binding and data type.

The result also gives how many families were scanned, those left out or not scanned with the reason, how many parameters were found, how many distinct names, how many shared and how many used, and the requested names that do not exist. With the same arguments as Delete family parameters it shows exactly what would be deleted.

How it works

  1. Your AI picks the families (often after Family list) and the filters from your request.
  2. BIMit opens each family in the background, as Edit Family would, reads its parameters, formulas, labeled dimensions and associations, and closes it without saving.
  3. Your AI gets the list and the totals and shows them to you, for example to decide which parameters to remove.

Example requests

  • "Which parameters do the furniture families in the active view have?"
  • "Find, across the whole project, the family parameters not used in any formula or dimension, grouped by name."
  • "How many families have the Manufacturer Code parameter, and where is it used?"

What changes and how to undo

Nothing in the model and no file: the families are opened in the background and closed without saving, and the .rfa files on disk are not touched.

Limits

  • It works on a project, not on a family open in the Family Editor. Since it opens families the way Edit Family does, it does not start on a read-only model or while another operation is in progress in Revit.
  • Families open in the Family Editor are skipped (close them and try again); in-place and non-editable families are left out.
  • With all the families in the project, the scan can take a few minutes.
  • If a family name does not exist in the project, BIMit says so and scans nothing.

Parameters

ParameterMeaning
famiglieNames or ids of the families; ids of types or elements work too. Empty: the families of the scope.
ambitoWithout famiglie: vista_attiva (default, elements visible in the active view), selezione (elements selected in Revit) or progetto (all families).
vistaWith scope vista_attiva: another view, by name.
vista_idOr the view's id.
parametriOnly the parameters with these names (exact name first, then ignoring case).
tipocondivisi (shared) or di_famiglia (family parameters).
legameistanza (instance) or tipo (type).
usonon_usati (in no formula, dimension or association) or usati (used).
cercaWords to search for in parameter, family, category, parameter type, instance/type, data type and usage; all must be present.
per_nometrue for a summary by parameter name instead of one row per family.
