Delete family parameters

Technical name: famiglie_elimina_parametri

Data › Families

Writes the model

Removes the chosen parameters from the loaded families and reloads each family into the project keeping the other parameters' values, then checks that they are gone.

What it does

Does what the delete step of the "Family parameters" window (Parametri famiglie) does: removes the given parameters from the loaded families and reloads each family into the project. The values of the remaining parameters do not change; the change applies to every instance of the family, also outside the active view.

  • Families are chosen as in Family parameters: by name or id, or by scope (active view, selection, project).
  • Parameters are chosen by name and/or with the filters (shared or family parameters, instance or type, used or not used, words to search for). Without names, you must explicitly ask to delete all those that pass the filters.
  • If a parameter is used, Revit also deletes the formulas that use it and the labels of its dimensions; the result lists these parameters with their usage.
  • Nested shared families are not changed: the version already in the project stays.

After the reload, BIMit reads each family again to check. It returns, per family, the parameters deleted, those not deleted with the reason and those still there, plus a summary and the requested names that were not found.

How it works

  1. Your AI, usually after showing you the list with Family parameters, calls the tool with the families, the parameter names and the filters.
  2. BIMit opens each family in the background, removes the parameters in one edit of the family, reloads it into the project keeping the values, closes it without saving and at the end reads the reloaded families again.
  3. You see the result in the model and get the report. No confirmation dialog opens in Revit: to see beforehand what would be deleted, ask for Family parameters with the same arguments. It is a risky tool: with BIMit's "Confirm risky actions" option on (it is on by default), the apps that support it ask for your permission at every call.

Example requests

  • "Delete from the families in the active view the family parameters not used in formulas, dimensions or associations."
  • "Remove the Manufacturer Code parameter from all the families in the project."
  • "Show me what would be deleted by removing the unused shared parameters from the selected families, then delete them."

What changes and how to undo

The families loaded in the project change: the removed parameters disappear, with their values, from every instance and type; if they were used, the formulas that use them and the dimension labels go too. The .rfa files on disk are not touched.

When Revit allows it, everything is a single operation, "BIMit: delete family parameters", and a single Ctrl+Z in Revit undoes it. If Revit refuses to reload the family inside a single operation, BIMit goes on family by family and each family is undone with its own Ctrl+Z. If no parameter matches the names and filters, the model does not change. If the operation stops because of an error, BIMit says so: read the families again before going on.

Limits

  • Your AI's access level must be at least Write.
  • It works on a project, not on a family open in the Family Editor; it does not change a read-only model and does not start while another operation is in progress in Revit.
  • Families open in the Family Editor are skipped (close them and try again); in-place and non-editable families are left out. In workshared models it does not touch families in use by another user.
  • If a parameter has changed since the scan (for example it became shared), it is not deleted: scan again.
  • If a family name does not exist in the project, nothing is deleted.
  • Every change to the model can be undone with Ctrl+Z in Revit; team actions ask for confirmation in Revit.

Parameters

ParameterMeaning
famiglieNames or ids of the families; ids of types or elements work too. Empty: the families of the scope.
ambitoWithout famiglie: vista_attiva (default, elements visible in the active view), selezione (elements selected in Revit) or progetto (all families).
vistaWith scope vista_attiva: another view, by name.
vista_idOr the view's id.
parametriThe names of the parameters to delete (exact name first, then ignoring case).
tipoOnly condivisi (shared) or only di_famiglia (family parameters).
legameOnly istanza (instance) or only tipo (type).
usonon_usati (in no formula, dimension or association) or usati (used).
cercaWords to search for in parameter, family, category, parameter type, instance/type, data type and usage; all must be present.
tuttitrue to delete all the parameters that pass the filters without naming them. Required without parametri.
