Read shared parameters

What it does

Reads a shared parameter file (.txt) and returns, for each parameter: GUID, name, group in the file, data type, description and state in the project:

• in the project: with the same GUID it is already a project parameter, instance or type;
• name already used: another project parameter has the same name with a different GUID, so this one cannot be added.

It also returns the path of the file read, the one set in Revit, how many parameters the file has, the list of the file's groups and how many parameters are already in the project.

Without a path it reads the file set in Revit (Manage › Shared Parameters). The file is only read and Revit's setting stays as it was. It is the first part of BIMit's "Add shared parameters" window.

How it works

1. Your AI gives the file (or none, to use Revit's) and, if needed, a group of the file, some words to search for, or to hide the parameters already in the project.
2. BIMit opens the file through Revit, compares each parameter with the project parameters by GUID and by name, and puts Revit's shared parameter file setting back as it was.
3. Your AI gets the list, sums it up for you and uses it to choose the parameters to pass to Add shared parameters.

• "Which parameters are in the shared parameter file set in Revit?"
• "Read C:\Standards\Office_parameters.txt and tell me which parameters of the MEP group are not in the project yet."
• "Are there parameters in the file whose name is already used by another project parameter?"

What changes and how to undo

Nothing: the tool only reads. The model, the shared parameter file and Revit's file setting do not change.

Limits

• The AI level "Read" is enough.
• Works on a project, not on a family.
• If no file is set in Revit, or the file set there no longer exists, you must give the path of a .txt file. A group that is not in the file is refused, with the list of the groups it has.
