Unpin

Model › Unpin

Finds the pinned elements of the model, category by category, and unpins only the ones you choose in a single Revit operation.

What it contains

Two tools for pinned elements (Revit's Pin command): one counts them by category without changing anything, the other unpins them. They work on the whole model, a view, the Revit selection or a list of ids.

For each category BIMit tells how many elements are pinned and whether they are usually better left that way: links (Revit models, CAD files, linked PDFs and images, point clouds, coordination models), levels, grids and scope boxes, the Project Base Point and the Survey Point, elements generated by the curtain wall type (panels, mullions, grid lines) and railing parts. These categories stay pinned unless you choose them explicitly. Elements inside groups are counted separately and are never unpinned from here: Revit unpins them only by editing the group.

When to use it

  • Before moving, copying or deleting in bulk elements that Revit won't let you change because they are pinned.
  • On a model received from others, to find out how many elements are pinned and in which categories.
  • To unpin everything that does not need to stay pinned, while links, levels, grids and project coordinates stay put.
  • In workshared models: elements in use by others or changed in the central model are reported and skipped, without making the operation fail.

The tools

  • Pinned elements: counts the pinned elements by category and tells which ones usually stay pinned. Changes nothing.
  • Unpin elements: unpins the elements of the chosen categories in a single operation, undone with one Ctrl+Z.

Good to know

Every change to the model can be undone with Ctrl+Z in Revit; team actions ask for confirmation in Revit.

Where it is in Revit

BIMit tab › Model panel › Unpin. From the package, "Open window" opens BIMit's "Unpin elements" window: choose where to look (Whole model, Active view, Selection), tick the categories (the "Defaults" button picks all except those that usually stay pinned) and unpin. If you also pick categories that usually stay pinned, the window asks for confirmation; when it closes, the elements that were not unpinned stay selected in Revit.
