Open a model

Model › Open models

Reads

Opens a Revit model (.rvt) or family (.rfa) from disk or the network in the background, detached from central if it is workshared, without blocking your AI while it opens.

What it does

Opens a Revit file, an .rvt project or an .rfa family, stored on your disk or in a network folder, so your AI can read it with BIMit's other tools without you opening it by hand.

The opening is a job: a large model takes minutes, so your AI does not sit waiting. BIMit answers at once with the job's id (or with the result, if the model opens within the waiting time asked for); then Job status follows its progress and Cancel the job stops it.

  • Workshared models: by default they open detached from central, preserving worksets, with all user worksets closed. Nothing is written to the central's folder. You can choose which worksets to open, or open the model detached and without worksets.
  • In the background: the model does not become the active document unless asked. Other tools reach it by its title.
  • Never audit: the model always opens without the Audit option.
  • Memory guard: if the available physical memory drops below a minimum during the opening (2048 MB by default), the opening is canceled and Revit stays usable.
  • Cloud models (BIM 360, Autodesk Docs, Revit Server): not supported yet.

How it works

  1. Your AI calls the tool with the file's full path (for example C:\Projects\Building.rvt or \\server\projects\Central.rvt) and, if needed, the worksets to open.
  2. BIMit checks the path (full, .rvt or .rfa extension, existing file) and queues the opening: it starts as soon as Revit finishes what it is doing.
  3. In Revit, BIMit reads the file's information: if the file was saved in a newer Revit version it stops; if it is from an older version, Revit upgrades it in memory (slower; the file does not change). If the model is already open in this Revit, BIMit uses it without opening it again.
  4. Revit opens the model with the chosen options. BIMit records the stage, percentage and available memory, which your AI reads with Job status. If Revit shows a dialog during the opening, BIMit does not answer it for you: your AI tells you, and the opening goes on once you answer in Revit.
  5. At the end your AI receives the title, path, whether it is a family, whether it is workshared, whether it is active, the state of the worksets, the memory and opening time, and any notes.

While Revit opens the model, the other tools that use Revit wait; Job status and Cancel the job answer at once.

Example requests

  • "Open the model \\server\projects\Hospital\Central_ARC.rvt in the background and tell me how many levels it has."
  • "Open C:\Projects\School.rvt with only the Structure and Facades worksets, then list the exterior walls."
  • "Open the family C:\Libraries\Double_window.rfa and show me its parameters."

What changes and how to undo

Opening a model does not change the file: by default a workshared model opens detached from central and nothing is written to the central's folder. A file from an older version is upgraded only in memory and stays as it is until you save it.

The only exception is the "copia_locale" option, to be used only when you ask for it: BIMit creates a local copy of the central in %LOCALAPPDATA%\BIMit\Copie locali and opens it attached to central, which registers your user in the central's folder. The path of an existing local copy also opens it attached.

A queued or running opening is stopped with Cancel the job: a canceled opening leaves no model open and Revit stays usable. If the cancellation arrives after Revit has finished, BIMit closes the model without saving (it cannot close it if it is the active document: in that case close it yourself in Revit).

The tool does not change any element of the model, so there is nothing to undo with Ctrl+Z.

Limits

  • The AI level "Read" is enough to open a detached model; the "copia_locale" option needs the "Team" level, which only you choose with the "Level" button on the BIMit tab.
  • .rvt and .rfa files on disk or on the network, with a full path. Cloud models: not yet.
  • A file saved in a newer Revit version does not open.
  • One call waits at most 120 seconds; a longer opening is followed with Job status.

Parameters

ParameterMeaning
percorsoRequired. Full path of the .rvt or .rfa file, on disk or on the network (e.g. C:\Projects\Building.rvt, \\server\projects\Central.rvt).
worksetWorkshared models: names of the user worksets to open, the others stay closed; ["*"] = all. Default: all closed (faster opening, less memory).
scollegaWorkshared models: conserva_workset (default: detached from central, worksets preserved), scarta_workset (detached, without worksets), copia_locale (only if you ask for it: creates a local copy of the central and opens it attached). Ignored for non-workshared models.
attivatrue = the model becomes the active document in Revit's window. Default false: opened in the background.
memoria_minima_mbMinimum available physical memory (MB) during the opening: below it, the opening is canceled. 0 = no guard. Default: BIMit's setting, otherwise 2048.
attesa_sSeconds to wait in this call for the model to open (0-120). Default 0: answers at once with the job's id.
